FEL's Wall of Fame
Honorary members
Jurian Rooks: Founder
“And then you’re suddenly an honorary member. Since we’d written the statutes ourselves, I naturally knew we’d include a section on “honorary members.” I just hadn’t anticipated that I would be appointed an honorary member. As chair of the founding board, I embarked on a wonderful adventure with immense pleasure, together with Joyce, Hidde, and Stan. From the very first encounter with rope, I fell in love with survival running. I wanted to train more, but Nijmegen didn’t have an association, so I could only practice on weekends. Joyce and I came up with the idea of starting our own survival running association in Nijmegen, a bold and ambitious plan. Especially during our medical studies, with our clinical rotations about to begin. However, we always believed we could succeed, and I’m truly grateful to all the people (members and other volunteers) who believed in us and supported us. It’s especially thanks to all these people that NSSV FEL has become what it is today. Pride is paramount. It still feels a bit like our baby.”
Hidde Elferink: Founder
“Survival running held a special place for me, as someone from the Achterhoek region. So when Jurian Rooks and Joyce Heutinck approached me in 2013 to help me set up a survival running club in Nijmegen, I was immediately enthusiastic. A fantastic time followed, with administrative, organizational, and, of course, sporting challenges. What a rush it was when we were able to train at ‘t FELdje for the first time. That first time on the long monkey hang was unforgettable (it was so taut that a razor blade could have snapped the rope). I look back on that time with great joy and am proud that, thanks to the efforts of all of us, NSSV FEL is growing and flourishing in the hearts of many students in Nijmegen.”

Quintin Poelen
The trainersgroup and PC wouldn’t be where they are today without Quintin. With the knowledge he brought (from Thor, among others), he knew a lot about a thing or two, and he was (and still is) always willing to share it. Whether it’s knotting courses for the PC, holding a train-the-trainer session for the trainersgroup, or simply sparring about areas for improvement… Quintin always enjoys doing these things, helping the club or you as an individual. And that often came on top of being a “regular” coach and PC member. A nice reward came in 2017 when he was voted Trainer of the Year at the Sports Gala, which was subsequently celebrated extensively. Because partying, yes, that’s also something you can leave to Quintin. Many a FELle party has been made legendary by Mr. Poelen’s actions. Cycling to Febo, needing a taxi to get to the hostel, and so on—well, with Quintin, you can certainly have a special evening. But besides partying, Quintin is also a strong survival runner, who even boasts the 2016 Ultra Survival Run on his resume. Quintin recently left FEL and is now brightening things up at 7Hills. But someone who has dedicated so much time and energy to the club for years with such enthusiasm… yes, he deserves to be a Member of Merit!
Lianne Slagter
During her time at FEL, Lianne not only learned about survival running, but she also volunteered for a long time in various roles in the early years of FEL. It’s no wonder the “Afslag” (Exit) is named after her and FEL appointed her a Member of Merit. This is how Lianne experienced her time at FEL:
“Over five years, I’ve witnessed the growth from a small group of friends with big ambitions to a fully-fledged sports club with over 100 members. I’m proud to have contributed to this by serving on various boards and committees, but especially by sharing the joys and sorrows with each other during training sessions, competitions, campfires, meetings, and many other FEL activities. I look back on a time when NSSV FEL offered me a warm and welcoming environment where I learned a lot, grew immensely, but above all, enjoyed myself and made friends for life!”
Jeroen Aaldering
Elise Heuts
“When I think of FEL, I look back on a wonderful time when (anything) was possible. For years, we worked with a wonderful club. From the Promocie to the trainers, from organizing activities to actively helping with the SurviFELrun. We were able to experience wonderful things together. A board position was a bit much for me. But I was definitely an active member. My motto: put your shoulder to the wheel and go for it.”
When Jurian left the (founding) board, I was asked if I wanted to fill his spot on the board as Activities Commissioner, and I enthusiastically said yes! That’s how a wonderful time at NSSV FEL began. Together with the FELlest Accie, we designed the first activities (think of the famous KamerKroegenTocht [Room Pub Crawl]), and with the Batacie, we finished 44th in our first participation at the 44th Batavierenrace. I also look back with pride on organizing the first three SurviFELruns, where we were able to expand each time, and which has beautifully developed into the current SurviFELrun. After five years on the Advisory Board, it was finally time to pass the baton, but it’s still wonderful to see where the association and SurviFELrun are and what they’re going for!
Martijn Bouman
Martijn has taken the SurviFELrun to the next level. During the lockdown, he (together with the Wedcie) organized an introductory run, because more was allowed in the summer, and it was a great success! In May 2022, the run was never this big. 500 participants, packed with volunteers, and an 8 km course. The participants were positive and even surprised by the difficulty of the run. It is therefore not surprising that Martijn was nominated for Volunteer of the Year at the 2022 NSSR gala. In 2023, there was another successful edition, including the NSK. After a year of preparation, the time had come: one of the best days of the year, and all the participants and volunteers enjoyed it so much. This day would never have been so smooth and fun without all the dedication of Martijn, who even quit his job to be able to work more hours for the Wedcie. Martijn can be found not only at Wedcie-related events. He’s also our FEL photographer, a member of the PC, a trainer, and the one who creates many cozy campfires. We consider such dedication to FEL exceptional!
